Microsoft reportedly giving BitLocker keys to law enforcement

For the first time, it has been revealed that Microsoft provided BitLocker encryption keys to the FBI during an investigation. This was possible because the suspect had backed up their recovery key to their Microsoft account.

While cloud backups are convenient for restoring access to your data, they technically grant Microsoft possession of the key. This means the company is obligated to hand it over if presented with a valid legal warrant.

If you prioritize privacy over convenience, security experts recommend avoiding cloud backups for BitLocker. Instead, store your recovery keys on a USB drive or print them out and keep them in a secure physical location.
