OpenAI launches Prism as a free AI-integrated workspace for scientific research

OpenAI has unveiled Prism, a new platform designed to streamline scientific writing and collaboration. Powered by GPT-5.2, Prism is a cloud-based workspace that supports LaTeX and allows users to draft, edit, and prepare research papers for publication within a single environment.

Unlike separate AI chat tools, the GPT-5.2 integration in Prism has access to the full project structure, creating a workflow where the AI understands equations, sources, and surrounding context. The platform is currently free for all ChatGPT users with no limits on the number of projects or co-authors.

Key capabilities include

  • Contextual Reasoning. Use GPT-5.2 Thinking to explore hypotheses and reason through complex scientific problems.
  • Smart Drafting. Edit text with full awareness of preceding and following sections, figures, and mathematical structures.
  • Literature Integration. Find and insert citations from sources like arXiv directly into the manuscript.
  • Visual Conversion. Convert images of whiteboard equations or diagrams directly into LaTeX code, eliminating manual formatting.
  • Real-Time Collaboration. Work simultaneously with co-authors and supervisors with live edits and comments.
  • Voice Editing. Use voice commands for quick edits without interrupting the writing flow.

Prism is built on the Crixet LaTeX editor. While the core functionality is available to everyone, more powerful AI features will eventually be introduced for paid subscribers.
