YouTube cracks down on “AI Slop”

YouTube is escalating its fight against mass-produced AI content. Following a new report by Kapwing, the platform removed a network of channels that collectively amassed over 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers.

These “content farms” used generative AI to automate low-quality videos—ranging from fake movie trailers to surreal children’s content—generating an estimated $117 million in annual revenue.

The study found that for new user accounts, nearly 20% of recommended videos were AI-generated spam. YouTube stated that while AI tools are permitted, they are aggressively removing accounts dedicated to producing spam and inauthentic content at scale.
