Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will officially cease production of the Model S and Model X in 2026. The decision was shared during a recent investor call, marking the end of the line for the vehicles that defined the company’s early success.
Key details from the announcement
- Strategic pivot. The factories currently producing these models will be converted to assemble Optimus humanoid robots. The commercial release for Optimus is targeted for 2027.
- Musk’s statement. “It is time to wrap up the Model S and X programs with dignity because we are effectively moving into a future based on autonomous driving.”
- Sales context. The decision aligns with sales data. Recently, the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck combined represented only about 3% of total Tesla sales, while the Model 3 and Model Y accounted for 97%.
Musk emphasized that buyers interested in the legacy flagship models should place their orders immediately before production winds down.
