OpenAI announces sunset of legacy models including GPT-4o

OpenAI has officially announced the removal of several outdated models to streamline their offerings. Starting February 13, 2026, the following models will no longer be available to general users:

  • GPT-4o
  • GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini
  • o4-mini
  • GPT-5 (Instant and Thinking variants)

Special mention was made regarding GPT-4o. While the model was originally kept online due to its popularity for “warm” conversation and a failed initial replacement by GPT-5, user migration is now complete. Usage of GPT-4o has fallen to just 0.1% as its conversational strengths have been successfully integrated into the newer GPT-5.1 and 5.2 models.

OpenAI clarified that these changes currently apply to consumer interfaces. Those accessing these models via API will not see service interruptions at this time. The company continues to prioritize improvements in model personality and creativity based on user feedback.
